ONE of the vital reasons for the longevity of fabric is the careful curation of music by the family of passionate music lovers behind the club and lifestyle brand. After a quarter of a century fabric remains a shining jewel in UK music culture and is a beacon to other clubs around the world.
Judy Griffith is the Programming Director at the club and since the inception 25 years ago has played a key role in the success, especially in programming the consistent, forward-thinking brilliance of the line ups we are used to on Saturday nights in EC1. Because of Judy working alongside Andy, Keith, Cameron, Craig, Terry and a myriad of other passionate protagonists from the fabric family, things look just as exciting as we head towards 2025 and the next 25 years.
Alongside our features with Laurent Garnier who is marking the release of his new fabric presents album on December 7th at the club and our interview with co-founder Cameron Leslie outlining the cultural importance of fabric, we caught up with Judy and asked her to share with us some of the highlights from the last quarter of a century at London’s revered night spot.
Judy Griffith’s fabric highlights
1999 – 2003 – Craig Richards 4am sets were the stuff of dreams. people would religiously come to the club at that time of the morning just to hear him work his way round that sound system 25 years on he is still creating the same vibe.
2002 – 2010 – This period when Ricardo Villalobos alongside our resident Craig Richards and sometimes with Richie Hawtin, Zip would come and play long, anything from 6 – 12 hour sets and blow our minds, sometimes we would go on till Sunday afternoon
Oct 2009 – On our 10th birthday when we did our first 30 hour+ non stop party with Craig, Ricardo and the late Andrew Weatherall all on the line up and have continued this birthday tradition ever since.
2016 – Getting our licence back after police and council shut us down for 7 months. seeing how the power of the people and our incredible global community coming together.
2021 – Getting recognised by arts and culture dept post covid for a grant to help us out of covid was also a defining moment as first time we were treated like the cultural institution that we are.
March 2022 – Presenting Mary Anne Hobbs – ‘All Queens’ brand at fabric where the entire club was staffed by women including sound technicians, operations, security, bar and all female artists on line up.
2024 – Our 25th year and birthday event – got to be our best birthday party yet. the event was 35 non stop hours of music and rave perfection.
