VICTOR RUIZ has an undeniably authentic strain to his electronic music.

Having been a staunch contributor to the progression of the genre over the last few years, his label VOLTA has become one of the best-selling techno labels within two years of its inception.

Victor’s latest release, This Is Not An Album is a collection of 8 tracks representing his enthusiasm towards a plethora of genres, delivering a slice of ear candy from melodic, emotive and groovy, to the deep, dark and hypnotic depths of electronic music.

We caught up with Victor this week and asked him to compile a selection of some of the most inspiring contemporary electronic music that inspires his own. Take a listen below and read what he had to say about each track.

Maceo Plex, Gabriel Ananda – Solitary Daze

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The mix of melodies, harmonies and the trippy flanged drums is what makes it for me.

It was also probably one of the most difficult vinyls to get in my collection.

DJ Hell – Wir Reiten Durch Die Nacht (Coyu Remix)

First time I’ve heard this track was in São Paulo during a set from Laurent Garnier – the very first time I saw him playing.

This one stayed in my head for weeks until I finally managed to discover the name and got obsessed with it for months. Played it for more than a year in every set.

Anthony Rother – Disco Light

This one takes me back to those times where we used to lose ourselves in the club for hours and hours and it was already daylight but you’re still at the club.

“The sun is disco light”. What a sentence!

Maetrik – Transform

I guess it was in 2009 – I played a gig in a very small club in São Paulo, it was when I met Maetrik’s music. We shared the booth and my mind was blown. It totally changed my life and his music influences me to this day.

This track has a chunky groove and a nasty bass synth with all the psychedelic sounds that Maetrik is known for. Fantastic!

Rex The Dog – Teufelsberg

My friend D-Nox was playing in Berlin one day and I went to see him. Everything was right until he dropped this gem. I immediately went to the boot to check the song and this was it. One of the best moments at a party I had was listening to this track.

Yotam Avni – Luna

Another track that got me hooked when I heard it in two different sets from Chris Liebing and Oliver Huntemann.

A perfect opening track with so much attitude and depth. A floor filler for sure.

Barnt – Chappel

I’m not even sure how I got this track to this day, but it’s definitely a secret weapon that I use in my sets and it always brings the house down.

A very simple yet futuristic track. Barnt is a genius in this regard and it’s very inspiring.

D-Nox, Victor Ruiz – Arise

This track was the one that put me on the map worldwide. I still remember the session me and Chris had in my old apartment in São Paulo back in the day.

The melodies just happened and we found synths that bend throughout the whole track. And whilst jamming with the SH101 and Prophet 08, we found big sounds.

It was one session that changed my life.

Pachanga Boys – Time

An all time classic that I don’t even have much to comment about. I just remember traveling through the roads in South Africa, looking at the landscape and listening to this. Time stood still. Maybe that’s why they put this name on the song.

Tale of Us – Another Earth

Do you remember when Tale of Us released on Richie Hawtin’s MINUS? Well I do. And it was amazing. This track was on top 1 on Beatport for months and months. Changed the whole game. Such good times!
